Can You Get a Gold CSCS Card With SSSTS?

No. SSSTS alone does not qualify you for a gold card. Here is why, what SSSTS actually gives you, and what you need to do instead.

Quick answer

The SSSTS certificate is a health and safety training course, not a competence qualification. It does not qualify you for any CSCS card. To get the gold CSCS card, you need an NVQ Level 3 or Level 4 plus a CITB test pass. SSSTS is valuable and most employers expect you to hold it alongside the gold card, but it cannot replace the NVQ.

Why SSSTS Does Not Get You a Gold Card

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in the construction industry, and it catches a lot of people out. The confusion is understandable: SSSTS stands for Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme and it is specifically designed for supervisors. So why does it not count?

The answer comes down to the difference between training and competence.

SSSTS is a training course. You attend for two days, learn about health and safety law, risk assessment, method statements, and your responsibilities as a supervisor. At the end, you receive a certificate confirming you attended the course and passed the assessment. It proves you have been trained.

An NVQ is a competence qualification. An assessor visits your workplace, reviews evidence of your actual supervisory work, and conducts professional discussions to verify you can do the job to the required standard. It proves you are competent.

CSCS cards are based on competence qualifications, not training courses. The gold card requires an NVQ at Level 3 or Level 4. No training course of any length, including SSSTS, can substitute for this.

The key difference: SSSTS expires after five years and needs refreshing. Your NVQ never expires. SSSTS proves you sat in a room and learned about health and safety. The NVQ proves you can actually supervise a construction site.

Do You Need Both?

In practice, yes. Most principal contractors and main contractors expect site supervisors to hold both the gold CSCS card (which requires the NVQ) and a valid SSSTS certificate. They serve different purposes:

The NVQ gets you the card. Without it, you cannot apply for the gold card, and without the gold card, most sites will not let you work at supervisor level. This is the formal requirement.

SSSTS gets you through the gate. Even with a gold card, many sites will check whether you hold a current SSSTS certificate at induction. If yours has expired or you never did it, some sites will refuse to let you supervise. This is a practical requirement set by individual employers, not by CSCS.

The smart approach is to do both in parallel. Start the NVQ Level 4 (which takes 16 to 20 weeks) and book the SSSTS course (two days) to complete during that period. By the time your NVQ certificate arrives, you will have both qualifications ready.

Get your Gold Card the right way

The NVQ Level 4 is assessed on your site over 16 to 20 weeks. No exams, no classroom, no time off work. From £1,150 + VAT with CITB grants of up to £600.

What Card Can SSSTS Get You?

None. SSSTS alone does not qualify you for any CSCS card. However, SSSTS combined with the right NVQ contributes to your overall supervisor profile:

SSSTS + NVQ Level 3 = Gold Supervisor Card (trade-specific supervisor route)

SSSTS + NVQ Level 4 = Gold Site Supervisor Card (multi-trade supervisor route)

In both cases, the NVQ is the card requirement. SSSTS is the employer expectation. Without the NVQ, SSSTS gives you no card at all.

If you already hold a blue CSCS card and an SSSTS certificate, you are in a strong practical position for supervisory work, but you still need the NVQ Level 3 or 4 to upgrade to the gold card. The blue card confirms your trade competence. SSSTS confirms your health and safety training. The NVQ confirms your supervisory competence. All three together are the full package.

What About SMSTS?

The same logic applies. SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is the five-day version of SSSTS aimed at site managers. Like SSSTS, it is a training course, not a competence qualification. SMSTS does not qualify you for the black CSCS card any more than SSSTS qualifies you for the gold card.

For the black card, you need an NVQ at Level 6 or above. For the gold card, you need an NVQ at Level 3 or 4. The training courses (SSSTS, SMSTS) sit alongside the NVQs as employer expectations, but they are never substitutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have SSSTS and 20 years of experience. Is there no way to get a gold card?

Not without an NVQ, unfortunately. Grandfather Rights were removed in 2024. The good news is the NVQ Level 4 is assessed on the work you already do. For someone with your experience, the evidence gathering is straightforward and the qualification can be completed in 16 to 20 weeks.

Does SSSTS count towards the NVQ?

Not directly. SSSTS and the NVQ are assessed separately. However, holding SSSTS demonstrates health and safety awareness that supports the H&S units in the NVQ portfolio. Your assessor may reference your SSSTS training when assessing those units.

Should I do SSSTS before or after the NVQ?

It does not matter. They are independent qualifications. Many people do SSSTS during the NVQ programme so both are ready at the same time. SSSTS takes two days. The NVQ takes 16 to 20 weeks. Starting the NVQ first makes sense as it is the longer process.

My SSSTS has expired. Do I need the full course again?

No. If your SSSTS certificate has expired, you can take the one-day SSSTS Refresher course instead of repeating the full two-day course. The refresher is typically £100 to £200.

What CITB test do I need for the gold card?

It depends on your NVQ route. NVQ Level 3 holders take the Operatives test (90% pass mark). NVQ Level 4 holders take the MAP test (80% pass mark). Both cost £22.50. Prepare with our premium mock test.
