What Is the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test?

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is a mandatory requirement for anyone applying for a CSCS card. It is a 50-question multiple choice exam taken at a Pearson VUE test centre, and you must score at least 45 out of 50 (90%) within 45 minutes to pass. The test assesses your understanding of health and safety practices on construction sites, covering topics including working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances, fire safety, electrical safety, excavations, and personal protective equipment.

There are different versions of the test depending on the CSCS card you are applying for. The Operatives test is for those applying for a Green Labourer Card or Blue Skilled Worker Card. The Supervisors test is for the Gold Supervisor Card. The Managers and Professionals test is for the Black Manager Card. This mock test covers both Operatives and Managers & Professionals (MAP) content. Select your test type before starting.

What Does This Mock Test Cover?

This free practice test contains 50 questions covering every topic on the CSCS Operatives & Specialists test: working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances (COSHH), fire safety, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, excavations, asbestos awareness, noise and vibration, first aid, general site safety, environmental awareness, welfare facilities, and risk assessment. Each question includes a detailed explanation referencing the relevant regulation or guidance.

The test is untimed, so you can take as long as you need to work through each question and read the explanation properly. Retake it as many times as you like to build up your knowledge and confidence before booking your official test.

How to Prepare for the CITB HS&E Test

The most effective preparation combines this mock test with the official CITB revision materials. Focus on the areas where you lose marks in your practice attempts, as the topic-by-topic performance breakdown at the end of each test shows you exactly where to concentrate your revision. Common areas where candidates struggle include the specific requirements of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, COSHH hazard symbols and their meanings, the hierarchy of risk control, RIDDOR reporting thresholds, and the correct procedures for working near underground services.

Your CITB HS&E test result is valid for two years from the date you pass. You must apply for your CSCS card within this window, or you will need to retake the test. The test costs £22.50 to book and can be taken at any Pearson VUE centre across the UK.

Which CSCS Card Do You Need?

The CSCS card system uses different colours to indicate the qualification level and role of the cardholder. The green card is for labourers and general operatives. The blue card is for skilled workers with an NVQ Level 2. The gold card is for supervisors with an NVQ Level 3. The black card is for managers with an NVQ Level 6 or 7. If you are unsure which card you need, use our CSCS Card Finder tool to get a personalised recommendation based on your role, qualifications, and experience.

For those looking to progress from a green card to a blue card without traditional classroom training, our guide on how to get a blue CSCS card without NVQ explains the alternative assessment routes available to experienced workers, including EWPA and OSAT.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the real CITB HS&E test?

The real CITB Operatives HS&E test contains 50 multiple choice questions. You have 45 minutes to complete it and must answer at least 45 correctly (90%) to pass. The Managers and Professionals (MAP) test also has 50 questions in 45 minutes with a 90% pass mark. This free practice test uses 50 questions covering the same topics as the real Operatives test, but without a time limit so you can learn at your own pace.

What happens if I fail the CITB test?

If you fail, you can rebook and retake the test after a minimum 48-hour waiting period. You will need to pay the £22.50 test fee again. There is no limit on how many times you can retake it. Using this mock test to practise beforehand significantly reduces the chance of failing and having to pay twice.

How long is the CITB HS&E test valid for?

Your CITB HS&E test pass is valid for two years. You must apply for your CSCS card within this period. Once your CSCS card is issued, the card itself is valid for five years regardless of when the test was taken.

Is this mock test the same as the real CITB test?

No. This is an independent practice test created by NVQ Reviews. The questions are original and written to reflect the style, difficulty, and topic coverage of the real CITB HS&E test, but they are not official CITB questions. This free version is also untimed, where the real test has a 45-minute limit. It’s designed for revision and learning at your own pace, not as a substitute for the official assessment.

Do I need a CSCS card to work on a construction site?

There is no legal requirement to hold a CSCS card. However, the vast majority of UK construction sites require one for access. Principal contractors, tier one builders, and most housing developers will not allow workers on site without a valid CSCS card. In practice, it is essential if you want to work in the UK construction industry.

Can I take the CITB test online?

No. The CITB HS&E test must be taken in person at an approved Pearson VUE test centre. You cannot take the official test online or remotely. However, you can use this online mock test to practise as many times as you like before booking your official test.
