How Long Does a CSCS Card Last?

The short answer

Most CSCS cards are valid for five years from the date of issue. The Green Labourer, Blue Skilled Worker, Gold Supervisor, and Black Manager cards all last five years. Some Red trainee and provisional cards have shorter validity periods, and a Red Experienced Worker card lasts just one year.

5 yrs
Standard validity

If you have just been issued a CSCS card, or you are checking how long you have left before yours expires, the answer is straightforward for most cards. Five years is the standard. But there are several exceptions, and what happens when your card expires is more important than most people realise. Working on a CSCS-required site with an expired card can get you turned away at the gate.

Here is exactly how long each CSCS card lasts, what to do before yours expires, and how to renew without ending up off site.

Validity by card type

Different CSCS cards have different validity periods. Most are five years, but the trainee, provisional, and experienced worker cards are shorter and have stricter rules.

Why CSCS cards expire

Five years feels arbitrary, but it is there for a reason. Construction site practice changes. Health and safety standards change. Materials, equipment, and regulations move forward. The CSCS scheme exists to give main contractors confidence that everyone on site has up-to-date knowledge of the safety and competence standards expected of their role.

Letting the card lapse and going years without re-engaging with the system would defeat the point. The five-year cycle is the compromise: long enough that it is not constantly disruptive, short enough that it keeps everyone refreshed.

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test plays a similar role. Even if your card is in date, the test result behind it is only considered current for two years. Once it ages beyond that, you have to retake it on renewal.

The Red cards work differently

Red cards are temporary by design. They exist to allow people on site while they work towards a permanent qualification. As such, none of them can be renewed in the traditional sense. Once the validity runs out, the card cannot be reissued unless the rules permit a one-off extension.

Red Provisional cards are valid for six months and can only be applied for once in your lifetime. They cannot be extended or renewed.

The Red Experienced Worker card is the one that catches people out most. It is a one-year window in which you must register on, and ideally complete, an NVQ Level 2 or above. If you do not, the card runs out and there is no second chance.

What happens when your CSCS card expires

If your card has expired, two things happen at once.

  • You are no longer CSCS-certified. The card is the proof of your status. Once the expiry date passes, you cannot use it as evidence of competence on a site that requires CSCS.
  • Most main contractors will not let you on site. Their access systems will scan your card and reject it. You may be allowed in on the same day to collect tools or close out a job, but generally you cannot start new work.

Working with an expired card is not an option on most sites. Even if your competence is unchanged, the principal contractor’s policy will almost certainly require a current card. Renew before yours expires.

How to renew your CSCS card

The renewal process depends on whether your CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test is still considered current. CSCS treats a test pass as current for two years. After that, you have to retake.

Here is what most renewals look like in practice.

Check when your card actually expires

Look at the expiry date printed on the front of your card. Aim to start the renewal process at least two months before that date so you do not have a gap in coverage.

Check whether you need to retake the CITB test

If you passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last two years, you do not need to retake it. If your last pass is older than two years, you do.

Refresh your safety qualification (Gold and Black cards only)

SSSTS lasts five years. SMSTS lasts five years. If yours has expired or is about to, book the appropriate refresher course. SSSTS Refresher is two days, SMSTS Refresher is two to three days.

Apply through CSCS

Renew online at cscs.uk.com or through the CSCS app. The renewal fee is £36, the same as a new card. If your test is out of date, add £22.50 for the retake.

Wait for the new card

Most renewed cards arrive within 5 to 10 working days. The CSCS mobile app gives you a digital version immediately, which most main contractors now accept at site entry.

Cost of renewal

If your CITB test is still current and you do not need to refresh SSSTS or SMSTS, renewing your CSCS card costs £36.

If your test is out of date, the total is £58.50 (£36 card fee + £22.50 test fee). Gold and Black card holders may also need to budget for a safety course refresher (£150–£400 depending on whether SSSTS or SMSTS).

Can I work on site with an expired CSCS card?

Strictly speaking, an expired card means you no longer hold a current CSCS card. Whether that matters on a particular site depends on the principal contractor’s policy.

  • Most major contractors (Balfour Beatty, Kier, Skanska, Mace, Costain, and the rest) require a current CSCS card for site access. Their gate systems will reject expired cards on scan.
  • Smaller contractors and domestic projects sometimes have less strict policies. You may be able to continue working in some cases, but if anything goes wrong you are exposed.
  • Public sector and infrastructure projects almost always require current cards. Network Rail, HS2, the MOD, and most highways projects will not let you start without one.

The honest answer: do not let your card expire if you can avoid it. Renewal is straightforward and the penalty for letting it lapse is being turned away from a job.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a CSCS card valid for?

Most CSCS cards are valid for five years from the date of issue. This applies to Green Labourer, Blue Skilled Worker, Gold Supervisor, and Black Manager cards. Red cards have shorter validity periods (six months for Provisional, one year for Experienced Worker, 4.5 years for Apprentice, five years for Trainee) and are not renewable.

How do I check the expiry date on my CSCS card?

The expiry date is printed on the front of your physical card alongside your name and qualification. You can also check by logging in to your account on cscs.uk.com or through the CSCS mobile app, which shows your card details and renewal status.

How long before my CSCS card expires can I renew?

You can renew up to six months before your card expires. We recommend starting the process at least two months before the expiry date to make sure there is no gap in coverage, especially if you need to retake the CITB test.

My CSCS card has expired. Can I still work?

On most major UK construction sites, no. Principal contractors typically require a current CSCS card for site access, and their gate systems will reject expired cards on scan. Smaller contractors may have more flexible policies, but the safest course is to renew immediately. Your CSCS app may still show your last card details, but it will be marked as expired.

Do I need to retake the CITB test to renew my CSCS card?

Only if your last test pass is more than two years old. CSCS treats a CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test pass as current for two years. If you passed within the last two years, your renewal is just the £36 card fee. If your test is older, you have to retake (£22.50) before renewing.

How much does it cost to renew a CSCS card?

The renewal fee is £36 if your CITB test is still considered current. If your test is older than two years and needs retaking, the total comes to £58.50. Gold and Black card holders may also need to refresh SSSTS or SMSTS, which adds another £150–£400 depending on the course.

Can I renew my Red Experienced Worker CSCS card?

No. The Red Experienced Worker card is a one-time, one-year card designed to give you a window to complete an NVQ Level 2 or above. Once it expires, you cannot apply for another. If you have completed your NVQ within that window, you upgrade straight to a Blue Skilled Worker card. If not, you would need to take a different route, such as the Green Labourer card.

What happens if I lose my CSCS card?

You can apply for a replacement online at cscs.uk.com for £36. The replacement keeps your existing expiry date. The CSCS app provides a digital version of your card that most contractors accept, so installing the app is a sensible backup if you regularly carry a physical card on site.

Is the CSCS app accepted instead of a physical card?

The CSCS smart check app and the CSCS mobile app are accepted on most major UK construction sites. The smart check app is what site staff use to scan your card. The CSCS app on your phone shows your digital card and is now widely accepted as proof of CSCS status. Some smaller sites still prefer a physical card, so it is worth carrying both where possible.
