NVQ Level 2 Construction Courses by Trade
The NVQ Level 2 is a trade-specific qualification, meaning you complete it in the exact trade you work in. There is no generic “NVQ Level 2 in Construction.” You need the NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry, Bricklaying, Plastering, or whichever trade matches your day-to-day work on site.
This matters because the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card is occupation-specific. A carpenter needs the carpentry NVQ. A plasterer needs the plastering NVQ. Getting the wrong one means your CSCS card will not match your role, and principal contractors will not accept it.

How On-Site NVQ Assessment Works
Unlike college courses, the NVQ Level 2 does not require you to attend classes or take time off work. The entire qualification is assessed at your workplace by a qualified NVQ assessor who comes to your site.
Your assessor observes you performing your trade, photographs and videos your work as evidence, reviews any documentation you produce, and conducts professional discussions covering your trade knowledge. For experienced tradespeople, this process can be completed in as little as 4 to 8 weeks.
NVQ Level 2 Cost and Funding
Most NVQ Level 2 assessments in construction cost between £750 and £1,500 + VAT, depending on the trade and provider. If your employer is registered with the CITB as a levy payer, they may be able to claim a grant of up to £600 towards the cost. Some providers also offer 0% finance, allowing you to spread the cost over monthly instalments with no interest. See our CSCS card cost guide for a full breakdown.
What Happens After Your NVQ Level 2?
Once your NVQ Level 2 certificate is issued, you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card. You will also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives (£21). The card application costs £36 and is processed within 5 to 10 working days.
With your Blue Card, you are recognised as a qualified tradesperson on any UK construction site. This unlocks skilled worker pay rates, access to more projects, and the foundation for further career progression through NVQ Level 3/4 (supervisor) and NVQ Level 6 (site management).
