What is COSHH?
COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. The COSHH Regulations 2002 require employers to assess the risks from hazardous substances in the workplace and implement appropriate controls to protect workers. This applies to chemicals, dusts, fumes, vapours, biological agents, and any other substance that can harm health.
Our free COSHH mock test covers the essential knowledge required for anyone who works with or near hazardous substances. Each question addresses a key aspect of the COSHH Regulations, from understanding safety data sheets and GHS pictograms to implementing the hierarchy of control and recognising workplace exposure limits.
This practice test is updated for 2026 and covers the current regulatory requirements. Whether you are preparing for a COSHH awareness course, revising for a workplace assessment, or refreshing your knowledge as part of your professional development, this test will help you identify the areas where you need to focus.

Frequently asked questions
Who needs COSHH training?
Anyone who works with or may be exposed to hazardous substances needs COSHH awareness training. This includes workers in construction, manufacturing, cleaning, healthcare, laboratories, agriculture, and any workplace where chemicals, dusts, fumes, or biological agents are present. Employers have a legal duty to provide this training.
What substances are covered by COSHH?
COSHH covers chemicals, products containing chemicals, fumes, dusts, vapours, mists, nanotechnology, gases, biological agents, and germs that cause diseases such as leptospirosis. Substances specifically excluded from COSHH have their own regulations: lead (CLAW 2002), asbestos (CAR 2012), and radioactive materials.
How often should COSHH assessments be reviewed?
COSHH assessments should be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a reason to believe the assessment is no longer valid. This includes changes in substances used, changes in work processes, new health and safety information, results of monitoring or health surveillance, or after an incident involving a hazardous substance.
