NVQ Courses for Every Stage of Your Construction Career
Whether you are a labourer looking to qualify as a skilled worker, a tradesperson ready to step into supervision, or a site manager formalising years of experience, there is an NVQ route for you. Every NVQ in our network is assessed on your site by a qualified assessor. No college, no classroom, no time off work.
We work with approved NVQ assessment centres who cover all major construction trades and NVQ levels from Level 2 through to Level 7. When you enquire, we match you with a provider who covers your specific trade and qualification. They handle everything from enrolment to certification.
NVQ Costs and CITB Grants
| NVQ Level | Unlocks | From | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | Blue CSCS Card | £799 + VAT | 6-12 weeks |
| Level 3 | Gold CSCS Card | £975 + VAT | 3-6 months |
| Level 4 | Gold CSCS Card | £1,150 + VAT | 16-20 weeks |
| Level 6 | Black CSCS Card | £1,595 + VAT | 4-8 weeks |

If your employer is registered with the CITB as a levy payer, they can claim a grant of up to £600 on completion for most NVQ levels. This significantly reduces the out-of-pocket cost. Your NVQ provider will confirm grant eligibility when they get in touch.
How On-Site NVQ Assessment Works
Unlike college courses, NVQs in construction do not require you to attend classes or take exams. The entire qualification is assessed at your workplace by a qualified NVQ assessor who comes to your site. Your assessor observes you performing your role, reviews evidence from your day-to-day work, and conducts professional discussions covering your knowledge and decision-making.
For experienced workers, fast track assessment can be completed in as little as 4 to 8 weeks for Level 2, or 4 to 8 weeks for Level 6 if you are already managing sites. The NVQ does not teach you new skills. It formally recognises the skills you already use every day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which NVQ level do I need?
It depends on your current role and where you want to go. NVQ Level 2 qualifies you as a skilled worker (Blue Card). Level 3 or 4 qualifies you as a supervisor (Gold Card). Level 6 qualifies you as a site manager (Black Card). Use our card finder tool if you are unsure.
Do I need to go to college?
No. If you are already working in construction, every NVQ from Level 2 to Level 7 can be assessed entirely at your workplace. No classroom time, no exams, no time off work.
How much does it cost?
NVQ Level 2 starts from £799 + VAT. Level 3 from £975 + VAT. Level 4 from £1,150 + VAT. Level 6 from £1,595 + VAT. Level 7 from £1,895 + VAT. CITB-registered employers can claim grants of up to £600 on completion.
Can my employer pay for it?
Yes. Many employers cover the full cost. CITB levy-paying employers can also claim grants towards the assessment fee. Ask your employer before self-funding.
What is the difference between NVQ Level 3 and Level 4?
NVQ Level 3 is trade-specific: you take the Level 3 in your individual trade and it qualifies you to supervise that trade. NVQ Level 4 is broader: it covers construction site supervision across multiple trades. Level 3 is best for trade gang supervisors. Level 4 is best for site supervisors, foremen, and assistant site managers.
How long does the assessment take?
It depends on the level and your experience. Level 2 takes 6 to 12 weeks. Level 3 takes 3 to 6 months. Level 4 takes 16 to 20 weeks. Level 6 can be fast-tracked in 4 to 8 weeks for experienced managers. Level 7 takes 12 to 16 weeks.
Is there an obligation if I enquire?
None at all. When you submit the form, an approved NVQ provider will contact you to discuss your options, confirm costs, and answer any questions. There is no commitment and no cost to enquire.
