The NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Floor Covering Occupations covers the preparation, measuring, cutting, and fitting of floor coverings including carpet, vinyl, laminate, and specialist finishes.

The NVQ is entirely workplace-assessed. Your assessor visits your current job, observes you preparing subfloors and fitting floor coverings, photographs evidence, and conducts professional discussions. No classroom, no exams.

On a fast track on-site assessment (OSAT) route, experienced floor covering workers typically complete the NVQ Level 2 in 4-8 weeks. This is the fastest route for workers already competent in their trade.

Through a standard college or apprenticeship route, the same qualification takes 12 to 18 months. Your assessor typically needs 3 to 5 site visits to gather all required evidence.

Do I need experience?

Yes. You need to be currently working as a floor coverer. Most providers require at least 6 to 12 months.

Is this different from the specialist concrete flooring NVQ?

Yes. Floor Covering covers soft and semi-rigid finishes (carpet, vinyl, laminate). Specialist Concrete In-Situ Flooring covers screed, resin, and power-floated concrete. They are separate qualifications.

Can I do it if I am self-employed?

Yes. Self-employed floor coverers can complete the NVQ on any active job.

Which awarding body?

ProQual, City & Guilds, and Pearson Edexcel all offer it. CSCS accepts all three.

What CSCS card do I get?
