Through a standard college or apprenticeship route, the same qualification takes 12 to 18 months. Your assessor typically needs 3 to 5 site visits to gather all required evidence.

Do I need experience?

Yes. You need to be currently working in highways maintenance or roadbuilding. Most providers require at least 6 to 12 months.

What is the difference between highways maintenance and roadbuilding?

Highways Maintenance covers repair and upkeep (patching, drainage, kerb replacement). Roadbuilding covers new construction (surfacing machines, planing). Your pathway matches your role.

Do I need Chapter 8 training as well?

Chapter 8 (traffic management) is separate. The NVQ does not cover signing, lighting, or guarding. Many employers require both.

Which awarding body?

ProQual, City & Guilds, and Pearson Edexcel all offer it. CSCS accepts all three.

What CSCS card do I get?
