What CSCS Card Do I Need?
The CSCS card you need depends on your role on site, your qualifications, and your level of experience. The Construction Skills Certification Scheme issues different coloured cards for different occupation levels, from green for general labourers through to black for senior managers. Each card requires a specific qualification and the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
Our CSCS Card Finder tool above takes your role, qualifications, and experience and tells you exactly which card to apply for, what it costs, and which test to book. It takes less than 60 seconds.
CSCS Card Types, Colours, and Costs
There are six main types of CSCS card. The colour of the card indicates the holder’s qualification level and role on site. All cards cost £36 to apply for and are valid for five years, though the qualifications behind them vary significantly in cost and time.

The total cost includes the CITB HS&E test (£22.50), the CSCS card application fee (£36), and the approximate NVQ cost where applicable. NVQ costs vary by provider and level. CITB grants are available to companies registered for the CITB levy and can significantly reduce or cover the NVQ cost.
How to Get a CSCS Card
The process for getting a CSCS card follows three steps regardless of which card you are applying for. First, you need the relevant qualification for your card type (unless applying for a Green Labourer card, which has no qualification requirement). Second, you need to book and pass the correct level of CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at a Pearson VUE test centre. Third, you apply for the card itself through the CSCS website or the My CSCS app.
The application costs £36 and cards typically arrive within five to ten working days once approved. You will need your qualification certificate and CITB test score report when applying.
How Long Does a CSCS Card Last?
All standard CSCS cards are valid for five years from the date of issue. The exception is the Red Trainee card, which is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. To renew any other card, you need a valid CITB HS&E test result from within the last two years and evidence that your qualification is still current. The renewal fee is £36.
It is worth starting the renewal process before your card expires. If your card lapses, you may be unable to access construction sites until the new one arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it matter what CSCS card I have?
Yes, it matters. Your CSCS card colour must match your role on site. A Green Labourer card does not allow you to carry out skilled trade work, and a Blue Skilled Worker card does not qualify you for supervisory or management responsibilities. Principal contractors routinely check cards at site induction and will refuse access if your card does not match the work you are there to do. Using the wrong card can also create legal and insurance issues for your employer.
What colour CSCS card do I need?
The colour depends on your role and qualifications. Green is for labourers (no qualification needed beyond the CITB test). Blue is for skilled tradespeople with an NVQ Level 2. Gold is for supervisors with an NVQ Level 3. Black is for managers with an NVQ Level 4, 5, 6, or 7. White is for professionally qualified people such as architects, engineers, and chartered surveyors. Use the Card Finder tool above to get a personalised recommendation based on your specific situation.
What is the difference between green and blue CSCS card?
The Green card is for general labourers and requires no construction qualification beyond passing the CITB Operatives HS&E test. The Blue card is for skilled workers who have completed an NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent apprenticeship) in their trade. The Blue card demonstrates that you are qualified to carry out skilled work such as bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, plumbing, or any other specific trade. Most workers start with a Green card and upgrade to Blue once they complete their NVQ Level 2. Read our full guide on how to get a blue CSCS card.
How much is a CSCS card?
The CSCS card application fee is £36 for all card types. You also need to pass the CITB HS&E test which costs £22.50. So the minimum cost for a Green Labourer card is £58.50. For Blue, Gold, and Black cards, you also need the relevant NVQ qualification, which ranges from approximately £500 to £2,500+ depending on the level and provider. CITB grants are available to reduce the NVQ cost for employees of CITB levy-paying companies.
How long does it take to get a CSCS card?
Once you have passed the CITB test and submitted your application with the required documents, CSCS cards typically arrive within five to ten working days. The total time from start to finish depends on how long the qualification takes. For a Green card (no qualification needed), you could have your card within two to three weeks of booking the CITB test. For a Blue card via EWPA fast-track, the qualification takes one to two days. For a Black card, the NVQ Level 6 typically takes three to six months for experienced managers.
Can I work on a construction site without a CSCS card?
Legally, a CSCS card is not a legal requirement. However, in practice, the vast majority of UK construction sites will not allow you access without one. Principal contractors on major projects require all workers to hold the appropriate CSCS card, and it is checked during site induction. Without a card, you will struggle to find work on any site managed by a reputable contractor.
My CSCS card has expired. Can I still work?
An expired CSCS card is no longer valid for site access. Most contractors will not allow you on site with an expired card. You need to renew it by passing a fresh CITB HS&E test (if your previous result is more than two years old) and submitting a renewal application. The renewal fee is £36. It is important to start the renewal process before your card expires to avoid gaps in site access.
