How Much Does a CSCS Card Cost in 2026?

The short answer

The CSCS card itself costs £36, plus you need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, currently £22.50. So the standard CSCS card application total is £58.50. The bigger cost is usually the qualification you need to qualify for the card in the first place, typically an NVQ.

£58.50
Application total

The cost of a CSCS card surprises a lot of people. The card and test together come to under £60, which sounds reasonable. But once you factor in the qualification you need to be eligible for the right card colour, the real cost can run from a few hundred pounds for a Green Labourer Card to over £1,500 for a Black Manager Card.

This guide covers exactly what you pay for a CSCS card, what each colour actually costs once the qualifications are factored in, what the hidden costs are, and where you can get funding to bring the total down.

The standard CSCS card application: £58.50

If you already hold the qualification needed for your card colour, the application itself is straightforward. Two costs make up the standard total.

CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test
Required for almost every CSCS card
£22.50
CSCS Card Application Fee
Paid directly to CSCS
£36.00
Standard application total
Test plus card fee
£58.50

That £58.50 is the published price at the time of writing. It applies whether you are applying for a Green Labourer card, a Blue Skilled Worker card, a Gold Supervisor card, or a Black Manager card. The card and test fees are the same. What changes by colour is the qualification you need to be eligible.

Heads up: The CITB test fee and the CSCS application fee are reviewed annually. The figures above reflect current pricing in 2026, but it is always worth checking cscs.uk.com directly before applying.

The real cost: the qualification you need

This is where the cost varies dramatically by card. The CSCS card itself is just the proof of qualification. The qualification is what costs the money.

Here is what each card colour actually costs once the qualification is included.

What you actually pay for in detail

If you want to understand where the money goes, it helps to break each component down separately.

1. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test (£22.50)

This is the test that almost every CSCS card requires. It is a one-hour computer-based test taken at an approved testing centre. The current fee is £22.50. There are several versions of the test depending on the card you are applying for:

  • Operatives: for Green and Blue cards.
  • Specialists: for specific trades like demolition or scaffolding.
  • Supervisors: for the Gold Supervisor card.
  • Managers and Professionals (MAP): for the Black Manager card and many professionally qualified cards.

If you fail, you have to pay the £22.50 again to retake. Most candidates pass first time, but it is worth practising properly. We have a free CSCS mock test and a premium mock test with full question banks for both Operatives and MAP versions.

2. The CSCS card fee (£36)

This is what you pay CSCS directly to issue the physical card once you have met the requirements. It applies to all card colours and is not refundable if your application is rejected, so it is worth making sure you meet the eligibility criteria before you apply.

The fee covers the card itself, which is valid for five years for most card types.

3. The qualification (the major cost)

This is by far the biggest part of the total cost for most cards. Each card colour requires a different level of qualification.

NVQ Level 2

Typically £799–£950 plus VAT. Required for the Blue Skilled Worker card. Workplace-assessed, no classroom time. CITB grant up to £600 available.

NVQ Level 3

Typically £975–£1,500 plus VAT. Required for the Gold Supervisor card alongside SSSTS. Suited to trade foremen and gang supervisors.

NVQ Level 4

Typically £1,150–£1,600 plus VAT. Alternative route to Gold (Site Supervisor) for those running broader site supervision rather than trade-specific.

NVQ Level 6

Typically £1,595–£2,200 plus VAT. Required for the Black Manager card alongside SMSTS. The most comprehensive supervisory NVQ.

4. The safety course (Gold and Black cards)

If you are applying for a Gold or Black card, you also need a current safety qualification.

  • SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme): a two-day course typically costing £250–£400. Required for the Gold Supervisor card.
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme): a five-day course typically costing £550–£750. Required for the Black Manager card.

Both certificates are valid for five years. After that, you take a refresher course (typically two days for SSSTS, two to three days for SMSTS) at around half the original cost.

Hidden costs people forget

The headline numbers above are the typical total. There are a few additional costs that catch people out.

  • Test retakes. If you fail the CITB test, you pay £22.50 again every time you retake. Practise properly first time.
  • Replacement cards. Lost or damaged cards cost £36 to replace, the same as a new application.
  • Renewal. Cards last five years. When yours expires, you typically need to retake the CITB test if it is more than two years out of date, plus pay the £36 card fee again. SSSTS and SMSTS holders also need refresher courses.
  • Photographs. The CSCS application uses a passport-style photo, which usually costs £6–£10 from a photo booth or pharmacy.
  • Awarding body fees. Some NVQ providers itemise an awarding body registration fee separately rather than including it in the headline price. Always ask for an all-inclusive quote.

Funding: how to bring the cost down

For NVQ qualifications, several routes can reduce or eliminate your out-of-pocket cost.

CITB grants. If your employer is registered with CITB and pays the levy, they can claim a grant of up to £600 towards your NVQ Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, or Level 6 on completion. Many employers pass this saving back to the worker or cover the full cost.

Beyond CITB, the main funding routes are:

  • Employer-funded NVQs. A lot of construction firms cover the full cost of an NVQ as part of staff development, especially for supervisors and site managers they want to retain. Worth asking before paying yourself.
  • Apprenticeship Levy funding. Larger employers can use Apprenticeship Levy funds to cover NVQs delivered as part of an apprenticeship programme.
  • Advanced Learner Loans. Available for Level 3 and above, repayable only once you earn over the threshold. Useful if you are paying for the qualification yourself and on a tight budget.
  • Self-employed CIS workers. Training costs are typically tax-deductible as a business expense. Speak to your accountant.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a CSCS card without an NVQ?

If you already hold a qualification accepted for your card colour, the CSCS card application itself is £58.50: £22.50 for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test plus £36 for the card. The Green Labourer card does not require an NVQ but does require a one-day Health and Safety Awareness course, bringing the total to roughly £155–£235.

Can I get a CSCS card for free?

You cannot get the card itself for free, but the costs around it can often be covered by your employer or by CITB grants. Construction employers regularly cover the test fee, the card fee, and the NVQ for staff they want to keep. If you are starting in construction, ask your employer before paying anything yourself.

How much does a Gold CSCS card cost in total?

A Gold Supervisor CSCS card via the NVQ Level 3 route typically costs £1,300–£1,900 all in. That covers the NVQ Level 3 (£975–£1,500), the SSSTS course (£250–£400), the supervisor CITB test (£22.50), and the card fee (£36). CITB grants can reduce the NVQ portion by up to £600.

How much does a Black CSCS card cost?

A Black Manager CSCS card typically costs £1,950–£2,800 all in. That includes the NVQ Level 6 (£1,595–£2,200), SMSTS course (£550–£750), the Managers and Professionals CITB test (£22.50), and the card fee (£36).

How much does it cost to renew a CSCS card?

Renewal costs depend on whether your CITB test is still valid. If your test was passed within the last two years, renewal is just the £36 card fee. If your test is more than two years old, you need to retake it, bringing the total to £58.50. Gold and Black card holders may also need to refresh their SSSTS or SMSTS certificate (around £150–£400 depending on which).

Why is the CSCS card so expensive?

The card itself is not expensive at £36. What pushes the total cost up is the qualification you need to be eligible for the card colour you are applying for. NVQ Levels 2, 3, 4, and 6 each involve workplace assessment over months and the cost of an awarding body certificate, which is where most of the price sits. The card and test together are under £60.

Does my employer have to pay for my CSCS card?

There is no legal requirement, but most main contractors and many subcontractors cover the full cost as a condition of getting on site. CSCS cards are effectively a workplace requirement on most UK construction sites, so most employers treat them as a business expense. It is always worth asking.
