What Is the SMSTS Course?

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a five-day course run by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). It is the most widely recognised health and safety qualification for construction site managers in the UK. The course covers the legal responsibilities of site managers, risk assessment, CDM Regulations 2015, and the practical application of health and safety management on construction sites.

SMSTS is not a formal requirement for the black CSCS card, but the overwhelming majority of employers expect site managers to hold a valid SMSTS certificate alongside their NVQ and CSCS card. On most major construction projects, SMSTS is treated as an industry standard and a condition of employment for management roles.

What Does the SMSTS Test Cover?

The SMSTS end-of-course assessment tests your understanding of key health and safety legislation and your ability to apply it in real construction scenarios. Topics include the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the CDM Regulations 2015, risk assessment and method statements, working at height, excavations, scaffolding, COSHH, manual handling, RIDDOR, fire safety, confined spaces, asbestos awareness, noise regulations, welfare requirements, environmental management, demolition, LOLER, permits to work, and worker engagement.

Our mock test covers all of these topics with questions written to reflect the style and difficulty of the real SMSTS assessment. Each question includes detailed feedback explaining the correct answer, the relevant legislation or regulation, and links to authoritative sources including HSE guidance and legislation.gov.uk.

How to Prepare for the SMSTS

The best preparation for the SMSTS assessment is a combination of active participation during the five-day course and focused revision using the course materials and mock tests. Pay close attention to the hierarchy of risk control, the duties of CDM duty holders, RIDDOR reporting requirements, and the specific action levels for noise and vibration regulations. These are areas where candidates commonly lose marks.

This mock test is designed to complement your SMSTS course, not replace it. Use it before the course to identify knowledge gaps, and again afterwards as a final check before your assessment. The detailed feedback and legislation references make it an effective revision tool that you can revisit as many times as you need.

SMSTS and Your Career Progression

Holding an SMSTS certificate alongside an NVQ Level 6 or NVQ Level 7 and a black CSCS card puts you in the strongest possible position for site management roles. Employers recruiting for site manager, senior site manager, and project manager positions typically list SMSTS as essential or highly desirable. Our construction management jobs board shows the types of roles available to fully qualified professionals.

If you are preparing for the CITB MAP test as part of your CSCS card application, much of the health and safety knowledge overlaps with SMSTS content. Use both mock tests together for comprehensive preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the real SMSTS test?

The SMSTS assessment format can vary between training providers and is updated periodically by CITB. Our mock test contains 75 questions across all core SMSTS topics to give you a thorough practice experience covering the full breadth of the syllabus.

Is SMSTS the same as SSSTS?

No. SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is the five-day course for site managers and senior supervisors. SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) is a two-day course aimed at supervisors and foremen. SMSTS covers more advanced content and is the standard expected for management-level roles. Try our SSSTS mock test if you are preparing for the supervisors course.

How long is the SMSTS certificate valid?

The SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. Before it expires, you can take a two-day SMSTS Refresher course to renew it for another five years. Most employers will not accept an expired SMSTS certificate.

Can I take the SMSTS online?

Yes. Since 2020, many CITB-approved training providers offer the SMSTS as a remote or blended learning course. The content and assessment are equivalent to the classroom version. Check that your chosen provider is CITB-approved before booking.
