The Black CSCS Card: The Manager’s Card

The black CSCS card is the highest standard card in the CSCS system. It confirms you are a qualified construction manager and is required to work as a site manager, project manager, or construction director on any major UK site.

What Is a Black CSCS Card?

The black CSCS card is the Manager-level card in the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. It is the card that confirms you hold a management-level qualification in construction and are competent to run sites, manage projects, and lead teams at the highest level. If you see someone on a construction site with a black card, they are a qualified manager.

The CSCS black managers card sits at the top of the card hierarchy, above the green Labourer card, the blue Skilled Worker card, and the gold Supervisor card. It requires an NVQ at Level 6 or Level 7 in construction management, plus a pass in the CITB MAP (Managers and Professionals) test.

Every principal contractor working on commercial, infrastructure, or large residential projects in the UK expects site managers and project managers to hold a black card. Without it, you will not be managing sites for any Tier 1 or Tier 2 contractor. It is the industry’s minimum standard for management credibility.

The black card is valid for 5 years and can be renewed with a valid CITB MAP test pass.

CSCS Black Card Requirements

To qualify for a black CSCS Manager card, you need:

1. An NVQ at Level 6 or Level 7 in a construction management discipline. This is the core requirement. The most common route is the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management, which is the industry standard for site managers. The NVQ Level 7 in Construction Senior Management is for project managers, construction directors, and those overseeing multiple sites or programmes. NVQ Level 4 qualifications in construction also qualify for the black card, though most people now go directly for Level 6.

2. A valid CITB MAP test pass. The MAP test (Managers and Professionals) is a harder version of the standard Operatives test used for the green, blue, and gold cards. It covers the same core safety topics but includes additional management-specific questions on risk management, legal duties, CDM regulations, and health and safety leadership. The test costs £21.50 and is taken at a Pearson VUE test centre. It is 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes.

Recommended but not required: a valid SMSTS certificate (Site Management Safety Training Scheme). SMSTS is a five-day health and safety course specifically designed for site managers. While SMSTS is not a formal CSCS requirement, virtually every principal contractor requires it. You will not manage a site for any major contractor without a valid SMSTS certificate, regardless of your card colour.

SMSTS does not replace the NVQ. This is the same misconception that affects every CSCS card level. SMSTS is a training course, not a competence qualification. The NVQ proves you can do the job. The SMSTS proves you understand the safety legislation. You need both to work as a site manager, but only the NVQ gives you the black card.

NVQ Level 6 vs NVQ Level 7

Both qualifications lead to the same black CSCS card. The choice depends on the role you are performing and your career goals:

For project managers, construction directors, and those managing multiple sites or programmes. Covers strategic planning, business development, contract management, and organisational leadership. Typically 8 to 16 weeks. Full guide.

How to Get a Black CSCS Card

The process to apply for a black CSCS card involves completing your NVQ, passing the MAP test, and submitting your application. Here is the step-by-step breakdown:

1

Complete your NVQ Level 6 or Level 7

Enrol with an NVQ assessment centre that offers workplace-based assessment. The NVQ is assessed against the management work you are already doing: running sites, managing programmes, coordinating trades, handling budgets, and leading health and safety. Your assessor will review your evidence, conduct professional discussions, and observe your management practice. For experienced managers, the NVQ Level 6 can be completed in 6 to 10 weeks. The NVQ Level 7 typically takes 8 to 16 weeks. Compare NVQ Level 6 providers.

2

Pass the CITB MAP test

Book the CITB Managers and Professionals test at a Pearson VUE test centre. The test costs £21.50 and covers 50 questions in 45 minutes. It includes the same core safety topics as the Operatives test (working at height, manual handling, PPE, hazardous substances) plus management-specific content on CDM regulations, risk assessments, method statements, accident investigation, and your legal duties as a site manager. Practise with our free mock test.

3

Complete your SMSTS (recommended)

Book the five-day SMSTS course through a CITB-approved provider. The course costs between £350 and £500 and covers health and safety law, CDM 2015, risk assessment, accident prevention, and the site manager’s legal responsibilities. SMSTS is valid for five years and is renewed with a two-day refresher course. Without SMSTS, most principal contractors will not allow you to manage their sites. Practise with our free SMSTS mock test.

4

Apply for your black card

Apply online through the CSCS website with your NVQ certificate number, CITB MAP test pass number, a digital photo, and proof of identity. The card application costs £36. Your black CSCS card arrives by post within 10 working days.

CSCS Black Card Fast Track

The fastest route to a black CSCS card is the fast track NVQ Level 6. This is designed for experienced site managers who are already doing the job but do not hold the formal qualification. If you are running sites, managing programmes, controlling budgets, and leading health and safety, the fast track NVQ Level 6 assesses you against the work you are already performing.

The easiest way to get a black CSCS card quickly is to combine the fast track NVQ with the MAP test and card application:

Fast track NVQ Level 6: 6 to 10 weeks. Your assessor will work with you to gather evidence from your current role. This includes site documentation you produce, professional discussions about your management decisions, and direct observation of your work. Because you are already competent, the process is about evidencing what you know, not teaching you new content.

CITB MAP test: 1 day. Book and sit the test at a Pearson VUE centre. Results are available quickly.

CSCS card application: 10 working days. Apply online once you have both your NVQ certificate and MAP test pass.

In total, the fastest realistic timeline from enrolment to card in hand is approximately 8 to 12 weeks. This depends on how quickly you can provide evidence and how responsive your assessor is. Some providers offer priority assessment services for an additional fee.

Be wary of providers promising unrealistic timelines. Any NVQ provider guaranteeing a black card in under 4 weeks should be treated with caution. The NVQ requires genuine evidence of management competence, and the awarding body must verify and certificate your results. Legitimate fast track is 6 to 10 weeks, not 2.

Can You Get a Black CSCS Card Without Qualifications?

No. The black CSCS Manager card requires an NVQ at Level 4, 6, or 7. There is no route to a black card based on experience alone.

The Grandfather Rights route was permanently closed in 2024. Before that date, experienced managers could apply for a black card under the Industry Accreditation scheme using verified industry experience. That route no longer exists. If your previous black card was issued through Grandfather Rights and it has expired, you will need to complete a qualifying NVQ to get a replacement.

The practical answer for experienced managers without formal qualifications is the same as for every other card level: enrol on a fast track NVQ. If you are already managing construction sites, the NVQ Level 6 is assessed against the work you do every day. You are not starting from scratch. You are formalising competence you already have.

If you are not yet in a management role but want to progress to the black card, the typical pathway is: gold card (NVQ Level 3) first, gain supervisory experience, then move to the NVQ Level 6 when you step into a site management role. Use our CSCS career pathway tool to map out your route.

Black CSCS Card Cost

The total cost of a black CSCS card depends on your starting point. Here is the full breakdown:

If you already have an NVQ Level 6 or 7

CITB MAP test£21.50
CSCS card application£36
Total£57.50

If you need the NVQ and SMSTS

NVQ Level 6 assessment£1,500 to £3,000
SMSTS course (recommended)£350 to £500
CITB MAP test£21.50
CSCS card application£36
Total£1,907.50 to £3,557.50

NVQ Level 7 assessment typically costs £2,000 to £3,500, slightly more than the Level 6 due to the additional strategic management units.

CITB-registered employers can claim training grants towards both the NVQ assessment and the SMSTS course fee. If your employer is CITB-registered, the effective out-of-pocket cost drops significantly. Ask your employer or NVQ provider about grant eligibility before paying. Some employers will cover the full NVQ cost for site managers as it is in their direct commercial interest to have qualified managers running their sites.

Black CSCS Card Salary UK (2026)

The black CSCS card salary ranges from £50,000 to £120,000+ depending on your role, experience, region, and sector. It is comfortably the highest-paying card in the CSCS system and the salary jump from gold card to black card is one of the most significant pay increases available to construction professionals in the UK.

Here is what black CSCS card holders earn across the main management roles:

RoleTypical SalaryDay Rate (Contract)
Assistant Site Manager£40,000 to £50,000£250 to £300
Site Manager£50,000 to £70,000£300 to £400
Senior Site Manager£65,000 to £85,000£350 to £450
Project Manager£60,000 to £85,000£350 to £450
Construction Director£80,000 to £120,000+£450 to £600+

Salaries are highest in London and the South East, and on large commercial, infrastructure, and residential projects. Tier 1 contractors (Balfour Beatty, Kier, Morgan Sindall, BAM, Vinci) typically pay at the top end of these ranges.

Black CSCS Card Salary by Region

RegionSite Manager SalarySenior SM / PM Salary
London£60,000 to £80,000£75,000 to £100,000+
South East£55,000 to £75,000£70,000 to £90,000
Midlands£48,000 to £65,000£60,000 to £80,000

Scotland£45,000 to £62,000£58,000 to £78,000

Highest-Paying Sectors for Black Card Holders

Not all construction sectors pay the same. Specialist and high-security projects command the highest day rates and salaries for black card holders. Data centre construction is currently one of the highest-paying sectors, with site managers regularly earning £80,000+ due to the technical complexity and demand outstripping supply. Nuclear decommissioning, pharmaceutical facility construction, and major infrastructure projects (HS2, highways, rail) also pay significant premiums over standard commercial and residential work.

Contract day rates in these sectors range from £350 to £600+ per day, with experienced project managers on nuclear and data centre projects commanding £500 to £650 per day.

The jump from gold card to black card salaries is one of the most significant in construction. A supervisor earning £40,000 to £50,000 on a gold card can realistically move to £55,000 to £70,000 within a year of obtaining the black card and stepping into a site management role. Black Card Renewal

The black CSCS card is valid for 5 years. To renew it, you need:

A valid CITB MAP test pass. Your test pass must have been taken within the last two years. If it has expired, you need to rebook and pass the MAP test before your card can be renewed. The test costs £21.50. Note that this is the MAP test, not the standard Operatives test used for the green, blue, and gold cards.

Your NVQ on record. The NVQ does not expire. As long as CSCS can verify your qualification through the awarding body database, you do not need to provide your certificate again.

The renewal process is handled through the CSCS website. The renewal fee is £36. Apply before your card expires to avoid any gap in site access. If your card expires before you renew, you may need to apply for a new card rather than a straightforward renewal.

Renew your SMSTS too. SMSTS is valid for five years and must be refreshed with a two-day SMSTS Refresher course before it expires. An expired SMSTS will not stop you renewing your black CSCS card, but it will stop you working as a site manager on most projects. Track both expiry dates.

CSCS Black Card Mock Test

The CITB MAP test for the black card is more demanding than the standard Operatives test. It covers all the same core safety topics (working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances, fire safety, electrical safety, PPE) but adds management-level questions on CDM 2015 regulations, your legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act, accident investigation procedures, risk assessment methodology, and method statement requirements.

The format is 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes with a pass mark of approximately 80%. If you have previously sat the Operatives test for a green, blue, or gold card, expect the MAP test to be noticeably harder. The management-specific questions require genuine understanding of legislation and management responsibilities, not just general site safety awareness.

Your Position in the CSCS Hierarchy

The black card is the destination that most construction professionals are working towards. Whether you started on a green card as a labourer or jumped in at gold as a supervisor, the black card represents the highest standard of management competence in the CSCS system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a black CSCS card with SMSTS?

No. SMSTS alone does not qualify you for a black CSCS card. The black card requires an NVQ at Level 4, 6, or 7 in construction management. SMSTS is a five-day health and safety training course that most employers expect alongside the black card, but it is not a competence qualification and cannot be used in place of the NVQ. You need both: the NVQ for the card, and SMSTS for site acceptance. Practise with our free SMSTS mock test.

How to get a black CSCS card without qualifications?

You cannot get a black card without a qualifying NVQ or equivalent. There is no experience-only route since the closure of Grandfather Rights in 2024. However, if you are already working as a site manager, the fast track NVQ Level 6 is assessed against the management work you already do. It does not require classroom attendance or exams. For experienced managers, the NVQ Level 6 can be completed in 6 to 10 weeks. This is the easiest way to get a black CSCS card if you already have the practical experience. Read our NVQ Level 6 guide.

Can I get a black CSCS card through the Grandfather Rights route?

No. The Grandfather Rights route was permanently closed in 2024. Before that date, experienced managers could apply using verified industry experience under the Industry Accreditation scheme. That route no longer exists. If your previous black card was issued through Grandfather Rights and has expired, you need to complete a qualifying NVQ to get a new one. The fast track NVQ Level 6 is the quickest replacement route.

What is the difference between a gold and black CSCS card?

The gold card is a Supervisor card requiring an NVQ Level 3. The black card is a Manager card requiring an NVQ at Level 6 or 7. The gold card covers team supervision and trade coordination. The black card covers full site management including programme control, commercial management, and health and safety leadership. The CITB test also differs: gold uses the Operatives test, black requires the harder MAP test. Salaries are significantly higher with the black card.

How much does a black CSCS card cost?

If you already hold the NVQ, the total cost is £57.50 (£21.50 MAP test plus £36 card application). If you need the NVQ Level 6, add £1,500 to £3,000 for assessment. Including the recommended SMSTS course (£350 to £500), the full cost ranges from £1,907.50 to £3,557.50. CITB-registered employers can claim grants to offset these costs.

What salary can I expect with a black CSCS card?

Black CSCS card holders earn between £50,000 and £120,000+ depending on role, region, and sector. Site managers typically earn £50,000 to £70,000, senior site managers £65,000 to £85,000, and construction directors can exceed £100,000. Contract day rates range from £300 to £600+. London pays highest, and specialist sectors like data centres, nuclear, and pharmaceuticals command significant premiums. The salary jump from a gold card supervisor role to a black card management role is typically £15,000 to £25,000 per year, making the NVQ investment one of the highest-return qualifications in the industry.

How long does a black CSCS card last?

The black card is valid for 5 years. To renew, you need a valid CITB MAP test pass taken within the last two years and your NVQ on record (which does not expire). The renewal fee is £36. Remember to renew your SMSTS separately as it also expires after five years.
