The Gold CSCS Card Explained
The gold CSCS card is the supervisor’s card. It proves you hold an NVQ Level 3 and are qualified to run teams on site. Here is everything you need to know about getting one.
What is a Gold CSCS Card?
The gold CSCS card is the Supervisor card in the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. It confirms that the holder has achieved an NVQ Level 3 in a construction trade or supervisory discipline and has passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test.
Where the blue card proves you are a qualified tradesperson, the gold card proves you are qualified to supervise others. It is the expected minimum for anyone working as a foreman, charge hand, gang supervisor, section leader, or trade supervisor on a UK construction site.
The gold card sits in a critical position in the CSCS hierarchy. It is the bridge between skilled trade work and site management. Many site managers started with a gold card before progressing to the black Manager card through the NVQ Level 6. If you are currently supervising a team on site, this is the card you should be working towards.
The gold card is valid for 5 years and can be renewed with a valid CITB test pass.
Gold CSCS Card Requirements
To qualify for a gold CSCS Supervisor card, you need:
1. An NVQ Level 3 in your trade or discipline. This is the non-negotiable requirement. The NVQ Level 3 is a supervisory-level qualification assessed in your workplace. It builds on the NVQ Level 2 by adding competencies in team management, quality control, work planning, and problem-solving. Common routes include NVQ Level 3 in your specific trade (e.g. NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying), NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations, or NVQ Level 3 in Construction Supervisory Studies.
2. A valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test pass. This is the same 50-question multiple-choice test required for the green and blue cards. It costs £21 and is taken at a Pearson VUE test centre. The pass mark is approximately 80% and your result is valid for two years.
Recommended but not required: an SSSTS certificate (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme). This is a two-day health and safety course designed specifically for supervisors. While SSSTS is not a formal requirement for the gold CSCS card itself, most principal contractors expect you to hold it alongside your gold card. Without SSSTS, you may find some sites will not accept you in a supervisory role regardless of your card colour.
SSSTS does not replace the NVQ. A common misconception is that the SSSTS certificate qualifies you for a gold card. It does not. SSSTS is a training course, not a competence qualification. You need the NVQ Level 3 for the card and SSSTS for practical site acceptance. They are separate requirements that work together.
How to Get a Gold CSCS Card
The process follows the same pattern as the other CSCS cards, with the NVQ Level 3 being the main step:
Complete your NVQ Level 3
Enrol with an NVQ assessment centre. The NVQ Level 3 is assessed in your workplace through a combination of on-site observation, portfolio evidence, and professional discussions with your assessor. You need to demonstrate supervisory competence: managing teams, planning work, maintaining quality, and resolving problems. Timelines vary from 3 to 12 months depending on your experience and trade.
Pass the CITB Operatives test
If you already hold a blue card, your previous test pass may still be valid (test passes last two years). If it has expired, rebook the CITB Operatives test at a Pearson VUE test centre. The test costs £21 and covers the same material as before. Practise with our free mock test.
Complete your SSSTS (recommended)
Book the two-day SSSTS course through a CITB-approved provider. The course costs between £200 and £350 and covers health and safety law, risk assessment, method statements, and the supervisor’s responsibilities on site. Valid for five years.
Apply for your gold card
Apply online through the CSCS website with your NVQ Level 3 certificate number, CITB test pass number, a digital photo, and proof of identity. The card application costs £36. Your gold card arrives by post within 10 working days.
Can You Get a Gold CSCS Card Without an NVQ?
In almost all cases, no. The gold CSCS Supervisor card requires an NVQ Level 3 or an equivalent qualification recognised by CSCS. Since the removal of Grandfather Rights in 2024, the alternative routes have been almost entirely closed.
There are very limited exceptions. Some older qualifications (certain City and Guilds Advanced Craft Certificates, for example) may still be accepted. CSCS maintains a qualification finder tool on their website where you can check whether your existing qualifications map to a gold card. Some Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) at Level 3 are also accepted.
If you are an experienced supervisor or foreman who has been running teams for years but never formalised your skills, the practical answer is a fast track NVQ Level 3. This is assessed in your workplace from the supervisory work you already do. An assessor reviews your evidence, observes your management of teams, and conducts professional discussions about your decision-making. For experienced supervisors, the NVQ Level 3 can typically be completed in 3 to 6 months.
Do not wait for your card to expire before acting. If you are currently supervising on a blue card or an expired gold card, start the NVQ process now.
Gold CSCS Card Price
The total cost depends on whether you already hold the NVQ Level 3:
If you already have an NVQ Level 3
If you need the NVQ Level 3
CITB-registered employers can claim grants towards the NVQ Level 3 assessment cost and the SSSTS course fee. If your employer is CITB-registered, the effective out-of-pocket cost drops considerably. Ask your employer or NVQ provider about grant eligibility before you pay.
Gold CSCS Card Salary
Supervisors and foremen holding a gold CSCS card earn significantly more than blue card holders. The supervisory premium reflects the additional responsibility of managing teams, coordinating trades, and maintaining quality and safety standards.
| Role | Typical Salary | Day Rate (Contract) |
|---|---|---|
| Trade Supervisor / Charge Hand | £35,000 to £42,000 | £200 to £250 |
| Site Foreman | £38,000 to £48,000 | £220 to £280 |
| Section Supervisor | £40,000 to £50,000 | £230 to £300 |
| General Foreman | £42,000 to £52,000 | £250 to £320 |
Salaries are highest in London and the South East, and on large commercial, infrastructure, and residential projects. Specialist supervisors (mechanical, electrical, groundworks, piling) tend to earn towards the top of these ranges.
The jump from gold to black card is where earnings increase most significantly. Site managers with the black CSCS card and NVQ Level 6 typically earn £45,000 to £70,000, with senior roles exceeding £80,000. If you are serious about maximising your earning potential, the gold card is a stepping stone, not the destination. Read our guide on becoming a site manager.

Gold CSCS Card Renewal
The gold card is valid for 5 years. To renew it, you need:
A valid CITB Operatives test pass. Your test pass must have been taken within the last two years. If it has expired, you need to rebook and pass the test before your card can be renewed. The test costs £21.
Your NVQ Level 3 on record. The NVQ does not expire, so this is a one-time requirement. As long as CSCS can verify your NVQ through the awarding body database, you do not need to provide your certificate again.
The renewal process is handled through the CSCS website. The renewal fee is £36 (the standard card application cost). Apply before your card expires to avoid any gap in site access. If your card does expire before you renew, you may need to apply for a new card rather than a straightforward renewal, which can take longer.
Renew your SSSTS too. If you hold SSSTS alongside your gold card, check the expiry date. SSSTS is valid for five years and must be refreshed with a one-day SSSTS Refresher course before it expires. An expired SSSTS will not stop you renewing your gold CSCS card, but it may stop you working on sites that require it.
Gold CSCS Card Mock Test
The CITB Operatives test for the gold card is the same test used for the green and blue cards. It covers core construction safety topics: working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances, fire safety, electrical safety, PPE, first aid, and risk assessment. The format is 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes with a pass mark of approximately 80%.
If you held a blue card previously, you have taken this test before. The content does not change between card levels for the Operatives test. However, if it has been a few years since you last sat it, a refresher is worth the time.

From Gold to Black: The Next Step
If you are holding a gold card and managing projects or running sites, the next move is the black CSCS Manager card. This is where the earnings jump, the career options widen, and the professional credibility shifts to a different level.
Your progression from gold
The black card requires an NVQ at Level 4 or above. Most people go directly for the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management, which is the industry standard for site managers. You will also need to pass the CITB MAP test (a harder, management-specific version of the Operatives test) and hold a valid SMSTS certificate (a five-day course, compared to the two-day SSSTS).
If you are already operating at site manager level but holding a gold card, a fast track NVQ Level 6 can be completed in 4 to 8 weeks. For the full breakdown, use our CSCS career pathway tool.

Can I get a gold CSCS card with SSSTS?
No. The SSSTS certificate alone does not qualify you for a gold CSCS card. You need an NVQ Level 3 in your trade or discipline. SSSTS is a two-day health and safety course that most employers expect alongside the gold card, but it is not a substitute for the NVQ. They are separate requirements.
What is the difference between a blue and gold CSCS card?
The blue card is a Skilled Worker card backed by an NVQ Level 2. It confirms you are a qualified tradesperson. The gold card is a Supervisor card backed by an NVQ Level 3. It confirms you are qualified to supervise and manage teams. The gold card is the minimum expected for anyone in a supervisory or foreman role. Read our blue card guide.
How long does a gold CSCS card last?
The gold card is valid for 5 years. To renew it, you need a valid CITB Operatives test pass taken within the last two years. Your NVQ Level 3 does not expire, so you only need to retake the CITB test for renewal.
Can I get a gold CSCS card without an NVQ?
In most cases, no. Since the removal of Grandfather Rights in 2024, the gold card requires an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent. If you are an experienced supervisor without the formal qualification, a fast track NVQ Level 3 assessed in your workplace is the quickest route, typically taking 3 to 6 months.
How much does a gold CSCS card cost?
If you already hold an NVQ Level 3, the total cost is £57 (£21 for the test and £36 for the card). If you need the NVQ, add £1,000 to £1,800 for the assessment. Including the recommended SSSTS course (£200 to £350), the full cost ranges from £1,257 to £2,207.
What salary can I expect with a gold CSCS card?
Supervisors and foremen with a gold card typically earn £35,000 to £50,000 per year depending on trade, location, and project type. Day rates for contract supervisors range from £200 to £300. Moving up to the black Manager card with the NVQ Level 6 increases typical earnings to £45,000 to £70,000.
Do I need SSSTS as well as the gold card?
Technically no, but practically yes. SSSTS is not a formal requirement for the gold CSCS card, but most principal contractors expect supervisors to hold it. Without a valid SSSTS certificate, some sites will not allow you to work in a supervisory role even if you have the gold card. It costs £200 to £350 and is valid for five years.
